Keep the Lakes Great

Sad but true: last week, the Michigan Supreme Court said that Michigan citizens don't have the standing to challenge Nestle corporation's "right" to keep taking water out of our lakes.

Great Lakes Guy had an informative post on The New (Water) Economy, comparing Michigan and Wisconsin approaches to water conservation and economic development.

Then I saw this 'toon and it got me thinking...

Being an transplanted Northeasterner, I'm still so impressed by Michigan's amazing lakes (both Great and small), forested areas, open spaces, etc. I'm less impressed by the fact that our state doesn't do too much to keep things green. We don't even have something as simple as annual car inspections -- keep our air cleaner and our roads safer, not to mention a little extra $$ for a state that could certainly use it. Back home, it's $35.00 per vehicle once a year.

Worth a thought!

Nor do we have decent recycling programs here in Livingston County to keep landfill waste -- and potential pollution from landfills -- out of the groundwater. Genoa Township has voluntary recycling pickup only every two weeks, yet picks up trash every week. Hardly adequate.
