Time to Do Something for Environment

Can you spare an hour or two for the environment?

Livingston County Democrats will take part in the Michigan Department of Transportation's quarterly roadside cleanup on Sunday, July 10. Volunteers will pick up trash along a two-mile stretch of M-59.

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Ironwood Golf Club, 6900 East Highland Road, Howell. The party will provide safety vests, bags, and sticks for picking up litter. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring work gloves.

Afterwards, volunteers go to breakfast together so it's a great way to get to know other Democrats, too!

Come Help Livingston Dems Clean Up County Roadside!

Spring is on its way and that means spring cleaning -- especially on our roadsides.

Livingston County Democrats will participate in the Michigan Department of Transportation's roadside cleanup program again this year. The spring cleanup date is set for Sunday, April 10, with a rain date of Sunday, April 17.

Volunteers meet at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of the Ironwood Golf Course, 6900 East Highland Road, Howell, to pick up litter along a two-mile stretch of M-59. Bring work gloves and wear sturdy shoes. The party will furnish safety vests and pick up sticks.

The winter's accumulation of litter can be daunting, but a drive-by inspection shows this spring's pile is not too bad. A good turnout of volunteers will make the work go faster.

And the best part is having breakfast together afterward.

This is a long-standing tradition for Livingston County Democrats. In 2010, the party marked its 25th year of cleaning up this portion of the county.

Sign of Spring -- It's Time for Roadside Clean-Up

You can tell spring is near. Not only is March Madness over, but it's time to clean the clutter from our roadsides under the Michigan Department of Transportation's roadside clean-up program.

Livingston Dems will meet at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 11, in the parking lot of Ironwood Golf Course, 6902 E. Highland Road, in Hartland Township. Safety vests, bags, and sticks for picking up litter will be provided, but people should wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring work gloves. Rest assured, however, you will not be handling roadkill.

This Sunday (Sept. 13, 2009) is your chance to do something to help the environment. And to enjoy fellowship and breakfast with Democrats afterwards.

Livingston Dems will assemble for their first roadside clean-up of the year this Sunday (April 19), as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation's highway clean-up program.

Meet at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the clubhouse at the Ironwood Golf Course, 6902 E. Highland Road (M-59), Howell, Michigan.

Safety vests, bags, and pick-up sticks are furnished.

Reflections on a Roadside Cleanup

This past Sunday was a glorious morning for a walk in the Livingston County countryside -- with a trash bag and a pointed stick -- as I found out by joining fellow Democrats in the quarterly roadside cleanup along M-59.

As I walked along enjoying the sunshine, blue skies, and green all around me, I did a little reflecting on the trash I was picking up, or not seeing at all.

First, muskrats are not very attractive creatures, especially when they have been squashed crossing the road.

Second, the Michigan deposit on beverage bottles and cans works. I did not see a beer can or pop can. Especially in tight economic times, people are taking those back to the stores for the cash.

Third, Michigan needs a deposit on non-carbonated beverages not covered by that law. Water bottles and juice bottles show up regularly on our roadsides. There's no need for that. With a deposit on those containers, people will either use fewer of them or return them for a deposit -- putting that valuable plastic back into the system to be recycled, saving oil.

Fourth, breakfast together after doing the roadside cleanup is a great idea and a great time to socialize with fellow Democrats!

Look Who's Cleaning Up!

Many thanks to those Democrats who turned out on Sunday (April 27, 2008) to help with the roadside cleanup along Michigan Highway 59!

The thousands of volunteers like these Democrats save the state of Michigan $1 million in litter pick-up costs with their efforts, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Set the Alarm, Get Some Exercise Sunday!

The forecast is for 60-degree temperatures on Sunday (April 27, 2008) so why not set the alarm, get up a little early, and get some exercise while helping out your community?

Sunday is the date for the spring roadside cleanup. Livingston County Democrats will be meeting at 8 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the clubhouse at the Ironwood Golf Course, 6902 E. Highland Road (M-59), Howell, Michigan.

All across Michigan this month, some 27,000 people will be volunteering their time to spruce up the state's roadsides, picking up the trash that has accumulated there over the winter, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Each year, volunteers like Paul and Pat save the state more than $1 million in litter removal costs.

At the Livingston Democrats' 25th annual Winans Dinner, Paul and Pat (above) were honored for their service in leading this clean-up for many years. How about lending a hand this year?

Local Dems Cleaning Up in April

Livingston Democrats want to clean up the county! Or at least a portion of it along M-59.

Democrats will turn out for the semi-annual roadside cleanup on Sunday, April 27, for two to three hours of litter pickup.

Volunteers interested in helping should meet in the parking lot in front of the clubhouse at the Ironwood Golf Course, 6902 E. Highland Road (M-59), Howell, Michigan, at 8 a.m.

Coordinators Paul and Pat Perosak will be there to pass out highway safety vests and rubbish bags.
