In Hamburg, the More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

The in-fighting in Hamburg Township did not stop with the Nov. 4 election.

Replacing one Republican (JoAnna Hardesty) with another (Matt Skiba) in the township clerk's job did not end the squabbling.

The latest incident is a sign erected by a Hardesty supporter attacking Skiba for his past financial problems. (Sign photo from Livingston Press and Argus website.)

Hardesty did not give up after losing to Skiba in the Republican primary, choosing to run a write-in campaign. Foolishly, the Press and Argus endorsed her instead of Democrat Debby Buckland. So Hamburg ended up with Skiba.

And the soap opera bubbles on.

I'm curious as to how you reach the conclusion that Hamburg ended up with Skiba because the newspaper endorsed Hardesty.

It's a stretch to say that Hardesty voters would have voted for Bucklund had Hardesty not been on the ballot. But even if they did, the combined Hardesty-Buckland votes were still well short of Skiba's total.

Or are you saying that Buckland would have won had the paper endorsed her? If so, that's a stretch.

I'm just constantly amazed at the fantasy world you live in.

Huh? The combined Hardesty-Buckland totals are well short of Skiba's?

Skiba--4,766 votes
Buckland--4,444 votes
Hardesty--2,187

Certainly, the Press and Argus might have influenced a few hundred votes from Hardesty.

Talk about a fantasy world. At least I can do math.

I was surprised by the fact the paper endorsed a write in candidate.
It seemed as if they could not get over Hardesty's loss in the primary.
The paper's endorsement did perpetuated the myth that Hardesty had a chance in winning which she did not.
She was such a big favorite with the paper that I think they editorial board lost their objectivity.
They did not have Buckland or any of the Democrats posted on their online voters guide, which reeked of unfairness!
Of course I was deeply saddened by the outcome, I found in the end Skiba to be a more ethical person than Hardesty and I am confident he will do a good job.
The person who posted that Skiba's vote totals were well over the combined total of Buckland and Hardesty is just flat wrong. Buckland lost by 322 votes, less than 3 percentage points.
